'His battle scenes depict cavalry skirmishes, attacks on military convoys and on travellers, depicting those subjects from the Flemish side in the Eighty Years' War and the Thirty Years' War.^[2][4] His preferred theme was cavalry engagements and his usual way of representing these was to place a dense cavalry skirmish in a certain area of the composition. Whereas some Flemish war artists such as Pieter Snayers painted battle scenes which depicted real battles in a topographical and analytical manner, Meulener only aimed to represent the battles in a general form.^[5] His battle scenes show similarities with those of Sebastiaen Vrancx, the first Flemish artist to attempt this subject matter.^[6] Some historians believe Meulener may have studied under Vrancx.'

The World Turned Upside Down: Arms and Armour of the British Civil Wars By: Royal Armouries

The Royal Armouries holds the most extensive collection of Civil War arms and armour in the country, as well as a number of military manuals, paintings and prints from the period. The museum is also home to the finest surviving Civil War era armoury from Littlecote House.

Our Study Day coincides with the 370th anniversary of the fall of Newark following the Third Siege and the surrender of King Charles I to the Scottish army outside the town; effectively bringing the First Civil War to an end (1642–46).

The First Civil War, despite promising Royalist campaigns, saw the destruction of the king’s army at Naseby (1645) and the establishment of Parliament’s New Model Army; the foundation stone of the modern British Army.

With a focus on the arms and armour of the Civil Wars the day will include lectures, gallery tours and the opportunity to examine and handle armour, edged weapons and firearms from the national collection.

Royal Armouries is pleased to present this Study Day in partnership with the National Civil War Centre, Newark.

May Bank Holiday ECW action

The National History Museum is one of Europe's leading open-air museums and Wales's most popular heritage attraction. It stands in the grounds of the magnificent St Fagans Castle, a late 16th-century manor house donated to the people of Wales by the Earl of Plymouth. During the last fifty years over forty original buildings from different historical periods have been re-erected in the 100-acre parkland, including houses, farms, a school and a beautiful medieval chapel. The battle of St Fagans raged over most of the area now covered by the museum, our battlefield and campsite and the area to the North.

 The Sealed Knot will once again return to Newstead Abbey to deomnstrate a magnificent re-enactment display. Come and see the superb siege camps, demonstrations and battle on Sunday and Monday.

Thirty Years War in the UK

The Guilde are already making plans for the anniversary of the 30 Years War in 2018. They have plans for a 36-man shot team plus pike and musicians to tell the tale of British combatants in the TYW. The Battle of Stadtlohn was fought on 6 August 1623 between the armies of Christian of Brunswick and of the Catholic League during the Thirty Years' War. The League's forces were led by Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly.
