The Bavarian Army during the Thirty Years War, 1618-1648: The Backbone of the Catholic League (Century of the Soldier)

Second edition 2021

This is a really good book that goes into the Bavarian army in great detail. This is a second edition with added content. If you are planning a 30YW wargames army then this book is what you need. But it goes deeper than that by examining all aspects of Bavarian military life in the period. Rations, billeting, food, and tactics are all looked at and then compared to the other armies of the time. I found the chapter on clothing the army particularly interesting. Basically it was not a good life in the Bavarian army - pay often in arrears, often malnourished, it was no wonder that plundering was so widespread. The colour section is very useful. Flags and standards feature as well as some excellent illustrations by Sergey Shamenkov. There is, it being a book about the Thirty years war, a fair bit on relations between the military and civilians as well as a chapter on the Militia. There is a great chapter Life and death in the army which explains the various aspects of military life as well as the civilians that followed the drum. So all in all a great read that I recommend.

Steel Fist 15mm Haselrig's lobsters

Steel Fist, my favourite ECW range just released this photo. They say

'Sir Arthur Haselrig's Lobsters! Here is a quick snap of our latest pack of Cuirassiers in attacking poses.

I have chosen to depict Haselrigs troop attacking rather than stationary as they were a very aggressive unit and even Sir Arthur was stuck in the middle of the action at the battle of Roundway Down.'

The Battle Of Naseby animation

This animation, produced by Cromwell Museum volunteer Felix Copping, used an original engraving of the battle of Naseby produced in 1647 as part of a publication 'Anglia Rediviva' to illustrate key moments from the battle. A full version including explanatory subtitles can be seen in the Cromwell Museum.

Queen Anne grenadier pouch

A Queen Anne period Grenadier's cartridge pouch . Made of russet and white buff leather with a velvet covered flap featuring a huge brass plate of a peg legged grenadier with lit grenade. He has the cypher "AR" on his cap with the motto "Love and Honor" underneath. My guess is this represents a minor hero of the time now unknown to us . I have no idea what regiment or company this may have belonged to. It is marked with the soldier's name and "no32" on the back.
