Vive la Roy - St George's Canzona

I did find this on YouTube. From the album "Music for Roundheads & Cavaliers"
St George's Canzona. Looks like there are CD copies of this knocking about.

  1. I have the double vinyl album, which is superb, but the CD omits a lot of the really good tunes which is a shame.

  2. "Vive LA(!) Roy"....?

    A Song or Vive le Roy

    To the tune of Vive le Roy

    The great Royalist recruiting song. The text of this old Royalist favorite is drawn from the collection Rump Songs which was published in London in 1662.

    What though the Zealots, pull down the Prelates,
    Push at the Pulpit, and kick at the Crown,
    Shall we then never, once more endeavour,
    And try to purchase our ancient Renown?
    Shall not the Roundhead to be confounded?
    Sa, sa, sa, sa boyes, ha, ha, ha, ha boyes,
    Then wee'le return, with Triumph and Joy,
    Then weel'e be merry, drink Sack and Sherry,
    Then we will sing Boys, God blesse the King Boys,
    Cast up your Caps, and cry, Vive Le Roy.

    What though the wise, make Alderman Isaack,
    Put us in(to) Prison, and steal our Estates;
    Though we be forced, to be un-horsed,
    And walk on foot, as it pleaseth the Fates,
    In the Kings Army, no man shall harm ye;
    Then come along Boyes, valiant and strong Boys,
    Fight for your Goods, which the Roundheads enjoyes;
    And when you venter, London to enter,
    And when you come Boys, with Phife and Drum Boyes,
    Isaack himself shall cry, Vive Le Roy.

    If you should chuse them, do not refuse them,
    Since honest Parliaments never made (them) Theeves;
    Charles will not furder have, Rogues dipt in Murder,
    Neither by Leases, long Lives nor Reprieves;
    Either Conditions, and Propositions
    Will not be granted, then be not daunted,
    We will our honest old Customes enjoy:
    Those not rejected, will be respected,
    And in the quire, Voyces rise higher,
    Thanks to the heavens and cry: Vive Le Roy.
