Military review at Hounslow Heath, 1686

  1. Very interesting map. Looking at the orientation, the army is roughly facing Northeast, so I assume that's the River Crane behind it. It does curve in the direction.
    Some years ago I walked part or the River Crane (from the A316 to the Thames), so south of what remains of Hounslow Heath. Can't work out where exactly the camp was. But along the stretch I walked there was an old shot tower, dating I think from c 1800. Obviously the river was useful for powering the mill(s). There were powder mills on other rivers too (e.g. the Hogsmill which runs from Kingston on the other side of the Thames.
    I think you've given me an idea for my next river walk! Thank you.
