Johann Grimmelshausen Abenteuerlicher Simplizissimus - Teil 1

Teil 2 Sorry there are no subtitles for thia ao it is for German readers. It is a famous book that was written about the 30YW. I read it once. If you want to read it go here.

Simplicius Simplicissimus (German: Der abenteuerliche Simplicissimus Teutsch) is a picaresque novel of the lower Baroque style, written in five books by German author Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen published in 1668, with the sequel Continuatio appearing in 1669. Inspired by the events and horrors of the Thirty Years' War which devastated Germany from 1618 to 1648, it is regarded as the first adventure novel in the German language and the first German novel masterpiece.

The full subtitle is "The account of the life of an odd vagrant named Melchior Sternfels von Fuchshaim: namely where and in what manner he came into this world, what he saw, learned, experienced, and endured therein; also why he again left it of his own free will."

Musket Fife and Drum

Also see hereBe good to get a British fife and drum thing going. It seems quite a well established thing in France.

Karl XII (1925)

I for one would buy a DVD of this.

Thanks to Andrey Efremov who says

'The movie consists of 4 parts and runs for about 6 hours or so. For many years, this was the most expensive film not only in Swedish, but also in Scandinavian in general. The soldiers are all made from Gustav Sederstrom's paintings and many scenes are compositionally based on him. All my attempts to find this movie and download it for free in any form have been in vain.'

Wargame the Jacobite '45

 Also mentioned.

Tricorn and Bonnet

These were mentioned.

"Tricorn and Bonnet" is a grid based set of wargame rules for use with model soldiers. Featuring innovative mechanisms the rules are intended for the most common sized battles in the period from Killiecrankie to Culloden Moor. At the core of the ruleset is a recognition that the risings were mostly an example of asymmetric warfare, with Government forces relying upon modern conventional armies and tactics against Jacobite commanders making use of traditional means of raising men and fighting. The Jacobite player will attempt to break the Government forces by intimidating them with aggressive hostile actions, whilst the Government player must bring to bear all the advantages that contemporary "modern" practice had to offer. The rules include clear explanations and diagrams, a quick reference sheet and a number of historical scenarios for you to fight. The rules can be used with any scale of figures and basing system.

Wargames rules for the Jacobite Rebellions?

 Anyone have any suggestions?

First Newbury 1643

Today's anniversary. Wiki

The First Battle of Newbury was a battle of the First English Civil War that was fought on 20 September 1643 between a Royalist army, under the personal command of King Charles, and a Parliamentarian force led by the Earl of Essex. Following a year of Royalist battlefield successes, in which they took BanburyOxford and Reading without conflict before storming Bristol, the Parliamentarians were left without an effective army in the west of England. When Charles laid siege to Gloucester, Parliament was forced to muster a force under Essex with which to beat Charles' forces off. After a long march, Essex surprised the Royalists and forced them away from Gloucester before beginning a retreat to London. Charles rallied his forces and pursued Essex, overtaking the Parliamentarian army at Newbury and forcing them to march past the Royalist force to continue their retreat.

Highlights of the Battle of Prestonpans Re-enactment

I am pretty sure this is 1995. My brother lives nearby and he sent me a VHS that was sold by the local library and I think it's the same footage.

It is approaching 30 years since the reenactment that kicked started the mid 18th century scene in the UK. This was for the 250th anniversary. Leading group was Pulteney's who still exist. Several other groups started then. I started a group in response to this activity.

This is worth getting if you are interested in the subject. My copy is worn through years of use. Covers up to and including the SYW.
