Seven Years War Russian troops

Tomasz Karpinski has discovered some eye witness drawings of the Russian army of the Seven Years war. To see them go to his page where there are PDFs in Russian, Polish, and the English language. If you are interested in the SYW Russian army this is highly recommended.

Muscovy's Soldiers: The Emergence of the Russian Army 1462-1689

This is a new paperback from Helion. Covering the age of transformation from an Eastern-influenced force to one more on Western lines. Also covers the transformation from bow to firearm. The book starts with the Muscovites influenced by the Mongol Golden Horde to the one inherited by Peter the Great. At the start of the study the army is almost all cavalry but this changes into something more resembling pike and shot. There is plenty of depth to this study in addition there are some excellent plates by Maksim Borisov. This is probably the best book on the subject we have in English. I must admit I knew very little on the subject but this book has been very useful in giving a good basis of knowledge.

Peter the Great Humbled. The Russo-Ottoman war of 1711

This is a superb book on the disastrous war in the Balkans between the Russian and Ottoman Empires. There is a shortage of books in English on this subject (Great Northern War and related campaigns) so this is a worthwhile addition to the range of available books. Nicholas Dorrell is well-known as an author for this subject and he covers the armies and campaigns well with orders of battles, uniform details and campaign analysis. There are some excellent plates of uniforms by Maksim Borisov. Also colour plates of Russian reenactors are used to illustrate the Russian side. Depicted in illustration are the impressive array of troop types involved, Cossacks, Moldavians, Walachians, Swedes,  and Poles. If you are thinking of wargaming this campaign then this book will be the book to get. Recommended

Very Good Russian Miltary History Site

For those readers of "Wars of Louis Quatorze" who might have an interest in Russian military history, this is an excellent web site. Called "From Rus to Peter", it covers the span of Russian military history from roughly 900 AD to 1725 AD.

The site (written in English) has pull-down tabs covering biographies of famous leaders, battles of the era, specific tabs on the Army and the navy, Politics, and the General History as well as Military History. Some very good articles with accompanying charts, maps, illustrations and photography. The illustrations are Osprey-style and the photos are of modern-day reenactments. Overall, very nicely done, and a good "thumbnail" source (at worst) for a bit of Russian information.

Battle of Klushino, 1610

Picked this up from TMP, a great reenactment over July 4th weekend of the Battle of Klushino during the Russian "Time of Troubles" period in 1610. Absolutely great painting and modeling references! I've already got the site bookmarked for when I finally start painting my own Poles. Some wonderful shots of arms, armour, drill, uniforms and standards and included participants from nine countries. Would have loved to have been there for this one! Check out all of the pic's here.

By the way, I'm remiss for not doing so sooner, but the excellent picture above, as well as all of those reached via the link, are the work of TMP'er Joe Dever. My thanks to him for it's inclusion and for the great write-up of the event.

As Friend Raia has pointed out, my earlier identification of this Battle as being during the "Deluge" was incorrect. It was actually during the preceding Russian "Time of Troubles", which took place from 1598 to 1613 and revolved around the troubles of succession from the end of the Rurick dynasty until the beginning of the Romanov dynasty. I have already edited the "Deluge" reference in the opening paragraph and apologize to readers for the error in terminology.
