The Battle of Lekkerbeetje or Lekkerbeetken (5 February 1600) was a cavalry duel fought by pre-arrangement on Vughterheide near 's-Hertogenbosch, North Brabant, between 22 Brabantine cavalrymen loyal to Albert VII, Archduke of Austria, garrisoned in 's-Hertogenbosch, and 22 French cavalrymen serving in the army of the Dutch Republic.[1]

Preacher Padget photo Geoff King
Someone who was active in the Roundhead Association when I was involved 40 years ago was Preacher Padget - spelling may be wrong. I think he was in Overton's. He was on the tv program 'That's Life' a couple of times for living a 17th century lifestyle, using quill pens by candlelight, that sort of thing and driving a bus for his day job. A fine preacher who put everything into it. I remember we were at the Naseby monument and he gave an address 'and I call out Emmanuelle, Emmanuelle, Emmanuelle' and some wag said 'Emmanuelle 3'.

The leader of the English forces Gerard Herbert was killed. Sir Simonds d'Ewes wrote of the account he received from Sir Dudley North, that Herbert "was slaine after three pikes first valiantlye brooken, being then shott in the head. This hapned through the cowardice of the Dutchmen in the outworkes, as he fullye dilated it to mee."[3]

This is a great painting of Tilly which incidentally is the name of my daughter-in-law's dog but I don't think she is a fan of the monk in armour.

Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly (Dutch: Johan t'Serclaes Graaf van Tilly; German: Johann t'Serclaes Graf von Tilly; French: Jean t'Serclaes de Tilly; February 1559 – 30 April 1632) was a field marshal who commanded the Catholic League's forces in the Thirty Years' War. From 1620 to 1631, he won an unmatched and demoralizing string of important victories against the Protestants, including White Mountain, Wimpfen, Höchst, Stadtlohn and the Conquest of the Palatinate. He destroyed a Danish army at Lutter and sacked the Protestant city of Magdeburg, which caused the deaths of some 20,000 of the city's inhabitants, both defenders and non-combatants, out of a total population of 25,000.

This is good. Worth a watch even if you failed O Level German like me.

At the end of this month, on March 31st to be exact, the exhibition "Soldiers of Count Josip Kazimir Drašković" will close at Trakošćan Castle. If you have the chance, definitely come and see it. For the first time after 200 years all 49 officer's portraits of the Esterhazy Infantry Regiment, which would not normally fit in the exhibition at Trakošćan Castle, have been exhibited!
Soon the catalogue in German and English is going to be printed.
