A very interesting painting, full of 'authentic-looking' details such as the ersatz gaiters of stripped canvas.
Of special interest, since rarely figured, are the typical highly decorated French military mules.
Unfortunately it seems that the only full color images of the painting available on the web show only its upper-right part (the death of the Chevalier de Belle-Isle) so the colors of the mules' harness, decorated eyelids, bells... remain so far a mystery.
