Fighting For Liberty by Stephen Carter

This is a fantastic book and to my mind a welcome addition to anybody's library. It brings fresh insight into the rebellion and a new way of telling the story of the two expeditions of 1685.  One of the novel approaches of this book is it deals with the Argyll venture in Scotland on an equal footing as the more famous rebellion in the West. Battles north of the border hitherto forgotten are examined and presented.
I would say the nature of this book is detailed military history - a particular good feature of this book is the many skilled maps of the events and skirmishes. Ideal for wargamers. I would say this is probably the most detailed book on the Rebellion out there - I believe it has taken many years to put this together and it shows by being full of useful information. Of course it's not just archives that feature in this book the author has been out travelling and visiting the sites of events photographing them and this is a another useful feature.
I feel like I have learnt a lot about the Monmouth episode that I didn't know so full marks for that. It has a lively style that keeps you reading and seeing what happens next. The colour plates are very good and useful as well as the many monochrome images from the era that pepper the text.  If you have an interest in the events of 1685 then this book should be on your shelves.

From Khurasan (15mm)

We are very pleased to add two French guard cavalry sets to our Late 17th century range. Available now:
http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/late-seventeeth-century.html

They are the Grenadiers a cheval and the Mousquetaires du Roi.  Most of the French guard cavalry can be depicted using the French or generic cavalry from the range, but these romantic elites were quite distinctive in appearance and warranted separate codes. We intend to make this the most thorough late 17th century range in any scale.

Next up — Caroline Swedes!  Stay tuned for details.

Out todayFIGHTING FOR LIBERTYArgyll & Monmouth's Military Campaigns against the Government of King James, 1685Fighting for Liberty gives a gritty blow-by-blow account of the campaigns of 1685. A conflict that starts in Orkney and ends on the battlefield of Sedgemoor. Today there is a myth that the rebels were a misguided peasant rabble, easily put down by disciplined lines of red-coated soldiers, but this is not reflected in the original correspondence, marching orders, and manuscripts. These tell a vastly different and far more dramatic story, one that pits the British Army against its former victorious captain general, the Duke of Monmouth. A forgotten story that involves marches across mountains, naval actions, and battles over desolate hilltops. After 20 years of research, Fighting for Liberty offers a fresh perspective on the events that became known as the Monmouth Rebellion, and will change your understanding of 1685.

The Rise of Modern warfare H W Koch (1983)

Back in the old days I had this book. Don't remember what happened to it probably lent it to somebody. Anyway it had the picture below Crossing of the Düna over two pages. Good book for finding out about that era. Anybody have it?

Crossing of the Düna 1701

The Crossing of the Düna (also known as Battle of Riga) took place during the Great Northern War on July 19 1701 near the city of Riga, present-day Latvia. The Swedish king Charles XII was in hot pursuit of king Augustus II the Strong of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and Saxony. The crossing was easily made, and the coalition troops were quickly broken and retreated.
