Highlights of the Battle of Prestonpans Re-enactment

I am pretty sure this is 1995. My brother lives nearby and he sent me a VHS that was sold by the local library and I think it's the same footage.

It is approaching 30 years since the reenactment that kicked started the mid 18th century scene in the UK. This was for the 250th anniversary. Leading group was Pulteney's who still exist. Several other groups started then. I started a group in response to this activity.

This is worth getting if you are interested in the subject. My copy is worn through years of use. Covers up to and including the SYW.

L'Assemblée - Fife & Drum, Hautbois

According to Chartrand there were three styles of drumming in the French army - French, German and Swiss though the differences have been lost to time.

JGBaroque says

This is an arrangement I made of the French fife and drum command "L'Assemblée from the French drummer's manual of 1754, which was used to signal the troops to assemble before a march.

The image shows the battle of Fontenoy of the War of Austrian Succession, 1745, with the British and French troops saluting each other before firing, as painted by Édouard Detaille

Preobrazhensky March - Fife & Drum, Hautbois

 JGBaroque says

'This is a fife and drum arrangement I made of the Russian "Preobrazhensky March", or more properly the "March of the Preobrazhensky Life Guard Regiment". The drums and the harmonizations are made by me, it also features oboes which were a common military instrument in the 18th century.

The image depicts Russian and Swedish armies at the Battle of Lesnaya in 1708, where the Russian army under Peter I (who is seen in the foreground) defeated the forces of Adam Ludwig Lewenhaupt. The painting was made by the French painter Pierre-Denis Martin in the early 18th century.'

Malbrough s'en va-t-en guerre

Very popular in the late 18th century. The same tune as For he's a Jolly Good fellow.

"Malbrough s'en va-t-en guerre" (Marlborough is going off to war), also known as "Mort et convoi de l'invincible Malbrough" (The death and burial of the invincible Marlborough), is a folk song in French.

History

The burlesque lament on the death of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650–1722) was written on a false rumour of that event after the Battle of Malplaquet in 1709, the bloodiest battle of the War of the Spanish Succession. It tells how Marlborough's wife, awaiting his return from battle, is given the news of her husband's death. It also tells that he was buried and that a nightingale sang over his grave.

The Armies and Wars of the Sun King Volume 2 The infantry of Louis XIV

This is a really useful work on the infantry. Chartrand has been the man to read on Louis XIV since the mid 80s when he used to do articles in Military Modelling magazine.

chambrée

Rene Chartrand talks about this concept. It is 5 or 6 men who share the same hut or barracks. Things like the cooking items were carried in turn. Pic N. Guerard 1695.

The Portal of Valenciennes Jean-Antoine Watteau

ca. 1710–11. The Portal of Valenciennes

Antoine Watteau is better known for his bucolic scenes but early in his career he painted a few realistic scenes, such as this one showing French soldiers idling the time away during winter in his home town of Valenciennes near the borders of the Spanish Netherlands (now Belgium) during the War of the Spanish Succession,

Antoine Watteau (1684-1721),  Bruno Mugnai said 'Watteau witnessed the march of French troops toward Flanders in 1709. The drawings are an impressive chronicle of that period. Some of the soldiers he portrayed fought at Malplaquet on 11 September.'

Anyone got his book Under the Double Eagle? I can't find my copy. There was a good pic of the Duke of Marlborough if anyone has it? This pic is from the Museum of Somerset.

Battle of Malplaquet 1709

The Battle of Malplaquet took place on 11 September 1709 during the War of the Spanish Succession, near Taisnières-sur-Hon in France, then part of the Spanish Netherlands. A French army of around 75,000 men, commanded by the Duke of Villars, engaged a Grand Alliance force of 86,000 under the Duke of Marlborough. In one of the bloodiest battles of the 18th century, the allies won a narrow victory, but suffered heavy casualties.
