The leader of the English forces Gerard Herbert was killed. Sir Simonds d'Ewes wrote of the account he received from Sir Dudley North, that Herbert "was slaine after three pikes first valiantlye brooken, being then shott in the head. This hapned through the cowardice of the Dutchmen in the outworkes, as he fullye dilated it to mee."^[3]

The Surrender of Breda

 

La rendición de Breda (English: The Surrender of Breda, also known as Las lanzas – The Lances) is a painting by the Spanish Golden Age painter Diego Velázquez. He painted it during the years 1634 and 1635, inspired by his visit to Italy with Ambrogio Spinola, the Genoese-born Spanish general who conquered Breda on June 5, 1625. The painting depicts the exchange of the key of Breda from the Dutch to the Spanish.

The first siege of Carlisle was an important event of the 1745–1746 Jacobite rising. Jacobite forces loyal to Prince Charles Edward Stuart captured the city of Carlisle and Carlisle Castle on 14–15 November 1745.

According to the Chevalier de Johnstone, the Jacobites held their fire in case the defenders found out how small was the calibre of their guns.^[2]

The storm was brief and bloody, lasting less than two hours. The assault was led by the regiments of Pickering, Dalbier, Montagu and Sir Hardress Waller, attacking from different directions. There were too few defenders to withstand the massive strength of the New Model Army. The Royalists were quickly driven back from the outer defences to make a last stand at the gatehouse of the Old House. A call for a parley from the defenders was ignored by the enraged Parliamentarians. Civilians as well as soldiers were slaughtered in the assault, including a number of Catholic priests. Between one and two hundred defenders were killed, the rest taken prisoner. The Marquis of Winchester is said to have been captured whilst hiding in a bread-oven. The architect Inigo Jones, who was among the civilians at Basing, was carried out naked, wrapped in a blanket.

Siege of Schenkenschans 1636

 The siege of Schenkenschans (30 July 1635 – 30 April 1636) was a major siege of the Eighty Years' War. In a successful campaign the Army of Flanders, commanded by Spanish general Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Austria, captured Schenkenschans along with a number of important towns, reversing recent Dutch gains and opening the Dutch Republic to a possible invasion. The Dutch Stadtholder, Fredrick Henry, pushed the republic's military efforts to their limit to recapture the fortress of Schenkenschans to counter the threat to the exposed Dutch heartland. He succeeded in doing so after a costly nine month siege.
