Maxen 1759

Today in 1759. Battle of Maxen - Wikipedia. Lovely battle painting.

The Battle of Maxen (20 November 1759) was a battle at Maxen, in the Electorate of Saxony during the Third Silesian War (part of the Seven Years' War). It resulted in surrender of a Prussian corps.

Mackay's Regiment

From the wiki               A 17thC German print assumed to show men of Mackay's Regiment in Stettin during the Thirty Years' War. The original caption states, "They are a strong and hardy people who survive on little food. If they have no bread, they eat roots [turnips may be intended]. When necessary, they can cover more than 20 German miles in a day's forced march. [1 German mile = 4¾ English miles] Besides muskets, they carry bows, quivers and long swords."

A Narrative of the Principal Services of the Regiment from Its Formation in 1626,to the Battle of Nordlingen, in 1634; and of Its Subsequent Incorporation with the Corps Now Known as the Royal Scots Or First Regiment of Foot of the British Army. A Paper Read Before the Gaelic Society of Inverness. Mackay's Regiment: A Narrative of the Principal Services of the Regiment ... - John Mackay (of Rockfield.) - Google Books

'All greeted their old commander with acclamation and joy, by beating the Scottish march as he approached, while a deafening cheer rang along their sunburnt lines, and the last solitary piper of MACKAY'S HIGHLANDERS blew long and loudly a note of welcome on the great war pipe of the north ; and as they all wished to ' take service' under him in France, the whole were incorporated into one corps'
