The landing of the Duke of Monmouth 1685

Today (June 11th) is the day Monmouth landed at Lyme Regis to begin his rebellion in the West Country. Image from Look and Learn. The Monmouth Rebellion was the last popular uprising in England and Sedgemoor the last pitched battle on English soil. Unless you live in Preston...

I was looking through facebook with a friend the other day at old college chums and came across press photos from a re-enactment of Sedgemoor in the 1980s, which several were involved in (from mid-somerset area).
Five miles from Sedgemoor at Marshall's Elm is also where the first shots of the ECW were fired in August 1642.
A force of about 500 Parliament supporters were marching to relieve Wells from Royalist martial control when they were routed by about 80 of the King's militia concealed in some medieval quarry pits (still visible if you know where to look).
