 More than 350 years after the death of legendary French musketeer d'Artagnan, remains have been found under the floor of a Dutch church that may well have been his.

Jan Wyck Duke of Monmouth

 This is reckoned to be Maastricht. Possibly the Duke of Monmouth.

 I was wondering if the trooper behind Monmouth was from Sir Henry Jones's regiment of Light Horse [pssibly Henry Jones who was Monmouth's bodyguard and killed by a bullet to the throat. .

in 1671 Jones obtained permission to expand the Gens d'Armes into a full-sized light cavalry regiment under his own command. The regiment known as Sir Henry Jones's Regiment of Light Horse or the English Regiment of Light Horse in France was about 500 strong. Jones was its first colonel and Ferdinando Lyttelton its first lieutenant-colonel.^[15][16] Jones tried to recruit men from his own troop in the Royal Horse Guards; much to his annoyance, there were few volunteers. Jones was killed by a bullet through the throat whilst he was attending the Duke of Monmouth at the siege of Maastricht in 1673.^[5]

 25th June was the death of 

Charles de Batz de Castelmore d'Artagnan

Killed by a musket ball to the throat at the Siege of Maastricht.

Battle of Grolle 1627 - 2012

The Battle for Grolle is a regular historical reenactment of the siege of the fortified border town of Groenlo (formerly known as Grol or Grolle) in the Achterhoek (NL) in 1627 during the Dutch Revolt. In the battle against the Spanish, the strong town Grol was attacked. The siege of Groenlo lasted 30 days. The First Churchills - episode 1

The Churchill channel has uploaded all 63 parts of this tv miniseries - one of the first I suppose -on the life of the Duke of Marlborough released around 1969. As I have said before this is mainly an indoors-set series but this first episode is worth watching as it depicts in a smallish way Churchill's early career under Monmouth at the siege of Maastricht. Even has the death of D'Artagnan thrown in for good measure.

Monmouth at Maastricht?

The Duke of Monmouth - maybe at Maastricht - interesting cavalry figures in the background. Is there a colour version of this? I think I've seen one. Some of the background people are wearing pots.
An eyewitness described Monmouth at the end of Sedgemoor 'removing his headpiece' (he fought with the infantry with a half-pike in his hand) - I've often wondered whether it was a cavalry pot or classical pikeman's helmet but then that probably makes me a bit weird.

This painting by Jan Wyck is in my local art gallery in Bath and I keep meaning to have a look at it in the flesh. It is thought to depict the Duke of Monmouth at the siege of Maastricht 1673...it certainly is a fine piece. Available as a print from Bridgeman art
