The Spur and the Lily by Howard Jones

Painting by Patrick Nicolle. Thanks to Mark Vaughn for finding this. It's historical fiction from Look and Learn. Set during the Monmouth Rebellion maybe you remember it? I don't as I was a Tell me Why reader.

"I heard the thunder of cavalry and saw the black belly of a horse above me". A dramatic moment from the first episode of the novel 'The Spur and the Lily' by Howard Jones, illustrated by Pat Nicolle.

This adventure set during the reign of King James II featuring the Monmouth Rebellion and premiered in Look and Learn issue 306, published 25th November 1967. Buy the original artwork here.

They say 'This past weekend, Svenska Lif:Compagniet participated in the event "Nordisk Stormaktstid" on Bohus Fortress.
It was fun to be able to have a larger event again after the pandemic.
Also, on a great historical location.
We had some time to train with the regulations made for the Swedish army in 1701'.

From Forever Edinburgh

 18 September 2021 - 19 September 2021

  • £3.00 - £5.00 per person + booking fee
  • Greenhills, Prestonpans

Hosted by the Scottish Battlefields Trust and the Battle of Prestonpans (1745) Heritage Trust, witness for yourself a spectacular weekend of living history and battle re-enactment displays as the two warring factions of the Jacobites and Redcoats meet for the 1745 Battle of Prestonpans.

Amongst the military action, there will be opportunities to explore the two military camps, talk to the soldiers to find out about life on the battlefield and watch as they train for the battle ahead of them. Then stand back and watch the full force of the encounter unfold…

There will be loud bangs and smoke from musket and cannon fire during demonstrations. Children must be supervised at all times and dogs must be kept on leads at all times. By entering the event field, you are confirming your understanding that battle re-enactments can be dangerous and you will not cross any safety barriers.

Visitors should note that this is an open air event, therefore please dress according to the weather conditions.

Tickets can be purchased on the gate or online in advance>
