30 Years War cannon

This is the "Nachtigall", a replica of the entire short Kartaune - one of the largest cannons of the 30-year war. The replica was started in 1987 on the initiative of Hermann Pfeifer. The cannon barrel was made in an ironworks shop, while barrels, wheels and gaskets were made by local craftsmen and members of the group. Today, the "Nachtigall" is one of the largest replica guns of its kind. In the reel, you can see it at a demonstration.

The Gate of Calais or O, the Roast Beef of Old England

 According to Middlesex Trading who do a repro 1717 this painting has 1717s in it. Good excuse to post it.

The Gate of Calais or O, the Roast Beef of Old England is a 1748 painting by William Hogarth, reproduced as a print from an engraving the next year. Hogarth produced the painting directly after his return from France, where he had been arrested as a spy while sketching in Calais. The scene depicts a side of beef being transported from the harbour to an English tavern in the port, while a group of undernourished, ragged French soldiers and a fat friar look on hungrily. Hogarth painted himself in the left corner with a "soldier's hand upon my shoulder."^[1]
