Siege of Ruthven Barracks (1746)

 

The siege of Ruthven Barracks that took place over the 10 – 11 February 1746 was part of the Jacobite rising of 1745.

In August 1745 the Jacobites had unsuccessfully laid siege to the barracks being repulsed by a small group of Government soldiers.^[2] However the Jacobites returned in February 1746 this time equipped with cannon,^[2] and as a result the Government garrison surrendered.^[1][3] After the Government surrender the Jacobites burned Ruthven Barracks, although the damage must have been slight because they were still in use afterwards.^[4]

The retreat from Derby was not the end of the Jacobite Rising, it was a tactical realignment. Following a highly disciplined and orderly withdrawal from England, the Jacobite Army arrives in Glasgow not as a broken force, but as a growing threat.

In this episode, we examine a Jacobite army at its peak strength: refitted, reinforced by fresh Highland reinforcements, and bolstered by the arrival of French regulars and gold. The tactical situation has never looked brighter for the Stuarts as they lay siege to Stirling Castle and prepare to meet General Hawley on the rainy moors of Falkirk. We are joined once again by historian and author Dr. Arran Johnston to break down the final major victory of the '45.

The Royal Oak Society will conduct the annual commemoration service for the 2nd Battle of Falkirk that took place on 17th Jan 1746, and resulted in a Jacobite victory.

The service will be held on Saturday 17th Jan 2026 at Mid-day.

The painting "The Pretender's Troops Entering Altrincham at Dawn" by Tom Colley, 1865–1902, is a significant piece housed in the Trafford Local Studies Centre in Sale. This artwork depicts the Jacobite Uprising against the English Crown, specifically the march of Charles Edward Stuart, also known as 'The Young Pretender' or Bonnie Prince Charlie, into Altrincham. The painting is a historical record and a charming work that captures the scene as it would have been experienced by the maker over a century after the event. It is a testament to the Jacobites' ambition and their use of Highland soldiers accustomed to harsh conditions. The painting is part of the Trafford Local Studies Collection and is available for public viewing and appreciation.
