The Battle of Cheriton of 29 March 1644 was an important Parliamentarian victory during the First English Civil War. Sir William Waller's "Army of the Southern Association" defeated a Royalist force jointly commanded by the Earl of Forth and Sir Ralph Hopton. Defeat ended Royalist hopes of retaking South East England and forced them onto the defensive for the rest of 1644.
Although less well known than the Battle of Marston Moor, in his "History of the Rebellion" senior Royalist advisor Clarendon considered Cheriton an equally disastrous defeat.[2]

He said 'I saw these unidentified pictures in Bamburg Castle in Northumberland. The description panel said they could not be named. I can see no clearly identifying flags that would explain the action but the picture was too good not to be shared in would appear to be quite a contemporary illustration but I am no expert , I found the use of grenades to be particularly interesting. Just thought it might be of interest.'

Preacher Padget photo Geoff King
Someone who was active in the Roundhead Association when I was involved 40 years ago was Preacher Padget - spelling may be wrong. I think he was in Overton's. He was on the tv program 'That's Life' a couple of times for living a 17th century lifestyle, using quill pens by candlelight, that sort of thing and driving a bus for his day job. A fine preacher who put everything into it. I remember we were at the Naseby monument and he gave an address 'and I call out Emmanuelle, Emmanuelle, Emmanuelle' and some wag said 'Emmanuelle 3'.
