Charles Kightly The Customs and Ceremonies of Britain

Picked this up today. Kightly was once Lord General of the Roundhead Association. The book has a photo of the King's Army in 1985. Note musket rest.

Les grandes batailles du passé - Naseby (1645)

50 years ago this month. The early ECWS as it was to become. This is quite the historical artefact capturing the Roundhead Association and King's Army at their numerically largest size.

The Campaigns of Bernhard von Saxe-Weimar 1631-1639

This will be popular I think. Not much in English on the subject. Fun Fact: Laurence and myself were once in the same Napoleonic regiment.

The Campaigns of Bernhard von Saxe-Weimar 1631-1639 from our Century of the Soldier 1618-1721 series is now available!

Discover the remarkable career of Bernhard von Saxe-Weimar, one of the Thirty Years’ War’s most capable and controversial commanders. Drawing on contemporary accounts, Laurence Spring explores his major campaigns and sieges, shifting loyalties, military ambitions and the devastating impact of warfare on civilians, offering a fresh assessment of a fascinating and complex military leader.

Hochkirch 1758

Today's anniversary.

The Battle of Hochkirch took place on 14 October 1758, during the Third Silesian War (part of the Seven Years' War). After several weeks of maneuvering for position, an Austrian army of 80,000 commanded by Lieutenant Field Marshal Leopold Josef Graf Daun surprised the Prussian army of 30,000–36,000 commanded by Frederick the Great. The Austrian army overwhelmed the Prussians and forced a general retreat. The battle took place in and around the village of Hochkirch, 9 kilometers (6 mi) east of Bautzen, Saxony.

Khurasan Miniatures news

 Khurasan Miniatures

In a few weeks Khurasan Miniatures will be releasing 1690s troops in 15mm — this is basically the period of the Nine Years War (sometimes ponderously titled “The War of the League of Augsburg”) and the associated Williamite war in Ireland.

The main differences from our existing late 17th century range are:
A) increased use of the flintlock by foot
B) informal tricornes commonly worn
C) French cavalry wore their scabbards on a waist belt rather than over the shoulder
Here are the generic horse with sword, painted as the fierce Irish Horse who caused a crisis for the Williamite cause at the Boyne until the Blue Guards stood firm.
Generic troops will be released first, followed by French horse.

Hinchcliffe English Civil War 25mm

me in Frome in 2010. The shop with the red door is where I bought my ECW Hinchcliffe. Several shops in town sold miniatures including Minifigs.

These were the first proper wargames figures I had for the period. I bought them from a shop in Frome that also sold stamps, old coins and medals. I painted them. Home - Hinchliffe Models

Cromwell Museum Curator reviews the film 'Cromwell'

Many people's understanding of who Oliver Cromwell was and what happened during the English Civil War is shaped by the 1970 film 'Cromwell', starring Richard Harris and Alec Guinness. Our curator, Stuart Orme, takes a look at the film and assesses what's good and bad about it from an historian's point of view...

Cromwell (1970) - The Battle of Edgehill

I like this film. I was ten when it came out so it was right up my street. See photo. I like the musket rests in this clip.
