Today is the anniversary of my favourite Civil War battle Lansdown near Bath. The pic is by Bath artist Stephen Beck. He used to do posters of this, Sedgeford and Basing. I like his stuff. I saw this battle reenacted as a kid - Wars of Louis Quatorze: Battle of Lansdown

A short history of Lyme Regis

My wife kindly bought me this book for the princely sum of 25p. Some interesting bits about the rebellion and aftermath with perhaps the most shocking fact that WIlliam Stukely claimed the remains of the quartering were still visible in 1723. There is also a poem supposedly written by Monmouth after landing and known in Old Lyme.

Lyme, although a little
place, I think it wondrous pretty; If 'tis my fate to wear a crown, I'll make of it a city.

One of my favourite Civil War regiments. Their high-point probably was Lansdown 1643

The 'London-lads' fought 'like so many invincible Romans..as long as light would suffer them to distinguish friends from foes...and wee must doe our enemies right, who fought it out very stoutly too; and indeed the charges were so incessantly hot on both sides, as the like (I believe) was never scene in England, not at Keynton-bataille, yea some old souldiers did say.'
