The 3rd Swiss regiment was "Reding" (became "Ehrler" in 1781), according to Swiss researchers. Interestingly, in Spanish sources/literature, this regiment is called "Jung-Reding", while in Swiss sources/literature it is called "Alt-Reding" ( and, conversely, the (according to the Swiss) 4th regiment which became "Betschart" in 1769 - yellow facings instead of red ones - is called "Jung-Reding" by the Swiss and "Alt-Reding" by the Spanish... pointless to investigate this matter further here). The girl is probably Swiss too (bright complexion, apparently fair hair), probably a soldier's wife and/or sutler. The drummer boy is interesting both in terms of uniform and hairstyle ... the painting must be dated to the early 1770s.
