On July 19, 1747, a landmark battle took place in the War of the Austrian Succession. This battle took place at an altitude of over 2,500m. It pitted the French army (32 battalions, commanded by Louis Fouquet de Belle-Isle), which wanted to open the road to Turin, against a well-entrenched Austro-Sardinian army on the heights (13 battalions, commanded by Jean-Baptiste Cacherano de Bricherasio for the Kingdom of Sardinia). Source: Wikipedia. According to some historians, this battle was "one of the craziest offensives in the history of mountain warfare."
